My Travail d’Initiative Personnelle Encadré — the short research project French students carry out during classe préparatoire, presented at the competitive entrance exams to the Grandes Écoles.
I decided to work on the use of Support Vector Machines (SVM) for computerized face detection. Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) was used for feature description, and SVM performed the classification. The performance of my model was compared against a baseline that used a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The year’s theme was La Ville (Cities) so I introduced my work in the context of real-time face detection for CCTV.
